This Is The Place!

Wednesday's Activity: Our little playgroup has been trying to get to "This Is the Place" for a couple of months, but it always seems to rain on Wednesdays. Finally we made it. Unfortunately, as soon as we got there Sam skinned his knee pretty badly and there was a lot of blood. I think this was his first skinned knee (I know that is amazing considering he is always nude). He didn't want to particpate in a lot of the activities after that, so our friend Jack is representing some of the things we did.

"This Is The Place" is just a few minutes from our house - near Red Butte Gardens. We intend to spend some more time there this summer.

From the brochure:
This Is The Place Monument marks the spot where the Mormon Pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley and marks the end of the 1,300-mile Mormon trail. It was here that Brigham Young stopped his carriage in July 1847 and, after surveying the desert valley near the shores of the Great Salt Lake, declared, "This is the right place." On July 24, 1947, exactly 100 years after his declaration, a heroic-sized bronze sculpture of Young and two of his colleagues was placed atop a 60-foot pedestal overlooking the Valley.

They also have recreated a pioneer village in the same realm as Williamsburg with real blacksmithers, animal husbandry, haberdashers, barbers, trains, etc.
